Students begin classes on their first day at Michigan Tech University

HOUGHTON, Mich. (WLUC) – Students buzz around the Michigan Tech University (MTU) campus for their first day of school.

Whether it was focusing on classes, hanging out with friends, or working on campus assignments, the first day was very busy.

Older students are expecting a more open and energetic campus as norms are eased due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Success coach and 3rd year student Kevin Hofer said, “My hope is that the number of cases of COVID will stay low so we can have a fun and active campus. “I’m starting in 2020, so I haven’t seen the campus fully come back to life yet, so I’m looking forward to that. Now that I’m a senior and have more experience, I’m hoping to make the most of my last two years at Michigan Tech.

The University’s Welcome Week is also underway and various activities are being organized for students. This includes passing out free binders on Monday, an American Red Cross blood drive on Wednesday and Thursday, and a pizza meet at the Diversity and Inclusion Center on Friday afternoon.

“We host these events to welcome the students back,” said MTU Dean of Student Engagement Kelly Raffaele. “And to continue the tradition that we’ve had at Michigan Tech for so many years and say, ‘We’re glad to have you back!’ It’s just a way of saying, ‘We’re so glad you’re here!’

TV6 wishes all students the best as they begin this new school year.
