Students develop business ideas at the Shark Day event at the University of Finland.

HANCOCK, Mich. (WLUC) – Back in its second year, the University of Finland’s Shark Day event is helping local students learn about entrepreneurship.

This includes the use of creativity and innovation in business.

They also had the opportunity to generate their own business ideas.

“A big focus is to get students to think outside the box,” says Lauren Haustedt, education partner manager at the University of Finland. “Before they break up to do their group sessions to create their product or service, they have to create a product or service based on a theme that we give them, and this year we have outdoor recreation as our theme.”

Students from the Baraga, Calumet and Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College CTE business classes participated in the event, each with their own initiative.

Some students are back from last year.

“I was excited to be in front of so many judges and learn more about starting your own business and investing,” said Calumet High School student Calumet Downard.

And the newcomers were ready to show their ideas for the first time.

“When we went into our teams, we were given what we wanted to do,” said Calmette High School student Gabrielle King-Takacs. “It’s a great time to come up with the idea, and it’s been a great time so far.”

The students’ ideas will be judged by the Big Sharks who are local business owners and entrepreneurs.

“It’s exciting to see the energy and the whole thought process they go through from creating their idea, developing their approach, and then having the big sharks stand in front of us,” said MTEC SmartZone VP of Business Development Jason Mack. .

A group of Calumet students called PEMDAS won this year with their idea for a ubiquitous electric wheelchair.

Finland was awarded a $2,500 scholarship to split among themselves for the 2023-2024 academic year.

Another Shark Day is planned for the university’s spring semester.
