Tech lands No. 7 in the AVCA Top 25 – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Lexington, Ky. Georgia Tech volleyball was ranked No. 7 in the AVCA Division 1 Coaches Top 25 Women’s Poll, the organization announced Monday. The seven spots tie the 2003 and 2020 squads for the fourth most received by the Yellow Jackets in program history.

Tech is one of two ACC teams in the top 10 and one of three in the top 15. In the Jackets, the white and gold already swept No. 15 BYU and faced No. 5 Ohio State, but they’re also prepared. They will face two more opponents this season in No. 3 Louisville and No. 12 Pitt that are currently ranked in the top 15. Louisville and Pitt each advanced to the Final Four, each of the aforementioned teams reaching the 2021 NCAA Tournament, while Ohio State and BYU both advanced to the Sweet 16, while the Jackets eliminated the Buckeyes in their Elite Eight run.

Georgia Tech’s selection marks its fifth consecutive season in the AVCA top 10 heading into the final stages of the 2021 season. Georgia Tech has entered the top 10 every week since being seeded No. 8 at the end of the 2021 season, tied for the highest single-season finish in program history with the 2003 Elite Eight team.

Appearing in the Top 25 for the first time since 2005 at No. 12 on September 30, 2020, Tech has been listed in 42 straight Top 25 polls so far.

Georgia Tech hosted the Georgia Tech Classic, one of the best ever, with the rivalry split into top 10 matchups. The White and Gold previously swept No. 10 BYU before falling to former No. 8 Ohio State in four sets. Top outside shooter Julia Bergman and middle block graduate Breland Morissette Both were named to the Georgia Tech Classic All-Tournament Team.

As a unit, Georgia Tech is currently fourth in the ACC in kills per set (13.29). Individually, Bergman currently leads the nation in kills (5.54) and points per set (6.33).

Tech has won 64 of its 77 games since 2019. The Yellow Jackets have won 39 of their 45 home games at O’Keefe Gymnasium.

The Jackets return to the road next day at Arkansas (7-1) on Thursday at 8 pm and Georgia (8-1) on Saturday at 7 pm to close out their conference slate.
