Tech Tabbed No.5 in AVCA Preseason Top 25 – Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets

Lexington, Ky. Georgia Tech volleyball was ranked No. 5 in the AVCA Division 1 Coaches Top 25 Women’s Poll, the organization announced Monday. The five-point streak ties the Yellow Jackets’ second-highest receiving streak in program history, joining the 2003 team that accomplished the feat in four straight weeks.

Tech is one of two ACC teams in the top five and remains one of three in the top 10. The Jackets are ranked this season against No. 3 Louisville, No. 7 BYU, No. 8 Ohio State and No. 10 Pt. Louisville and Pitt each advanced to the Final Four, each of the aforementioned teams reaching the 2021 NCAA Tournament, while Ohio State and BYU both advanced to the Sweet 16, while the Jackets eliminated the Buckeyes in their Elite Eight run.

The Jackets’ selection marks their third consecutive appearance in the AVCA’s top 10 after being revised to No. 9 in last week’s preseason rankings and No. 8 at the end of the 2021 season. The 2021 season finish tied the 2003 Elite Eight team for the most finish in a single season in program history.

Appearing in the Top 25 for the first time since 2005 at No. 12 on September 30, 2020, Tech has been listed in 40 straight Top 25 polls so far. This week’s No. 5 ranking marks the peak of the season in white and gold.

Georgia Tech achieved historic status after running the table before sweeping No. 19 Illinois at the Ole Miss Invitational, downing host Ole Miss, 3-1. The Yellow Jackets overcame a slow start against the Rebels, largely thanks to a 33-kill performance from the foreigner. Julia Bergman. The White and Gold had no trouble against the struggling Illini, beating Illinois by a combined 18 points in the final two playoffs to earn their first playoff berth of the season. The Yellow Jackets were the only undefeated teams to win the Ole Miss Invitational, while Bergman was named the season MVP and All-Tournament team along with a graduate middling defense. Breland Morissette.

As a unit, Georgia Tech currently ranks third in the ACC in assists per set (12.57), hitting percentage (.266) and kills per set (14.14), the latter third. Individually, Bergman ranks atop the nation in both kills per set (6.43) and points per set (7.21).

Tech has won 60 of its 72 games since 2019. The Yellow Jackets have won 35 of their 40 home games at O’Keefe Gymnasium.

The Jackets will make their official return to O’Keefe Gymnasium by hosting the GT Invitational, taking on Dayton on Friday at 8 p.m., Arizona State on Saturday at 5 p.m. and FIU on Sunday at 2 p.m.
