Tess Holliday talks ultra-thin about getting back into fashion

Tess Holliday is sharing a message about how society celebrates weakness.

The model, 37, took to Instagram on Saturday to share multiple photos of herself, as well as some inspiring memes. Captioning the photo, she shared that she is “fatter, happier and hotter than ever.”

The body positivity activist continued, “Looking at older photos of my career and life has been so painful for me that I would almost close my eyes when I looked at the camera roll. Aside from my body changing, one of the hardest realizations was the deep sadness in my eyes. Even in my ‘happy’ moments, it’s very noticeable. (Lolllllll why didn’t you tell me all of them?! JK). Would I look back at my work and feel like I didn’t want to give my best or be fully present because of the abuse that surrounded me? Until recently I was afraid that maybe I had made my wildest dreams come true and I didn’t get to fully enjoy them all. Spoiler: I was wrong and the best is yet to come!”

She added, “In society we still hold up smaller bodies as the ideal definition of having it all together. There is talk of a change in fashion where the ultra-thin body will be the new ‘trend’. But what if we allowed the idea to seep into our collective that ‘having it all together’, healing and being happy exists in bodies like mine? Healing deep internal wounds and leveling up for some means our bodies will inevitably get bigger. It is essential that as things continue to change in our culture, we give ourselves grace and compassion.”

Holliday added that while her “body is softer” and her “jaw is rounder,” her “heart is stronger” than when she was younger. She shared that she is now “more confident” and “kinder”.

“My weight gain may be obvious to some, but for those who really pay attention, all they see is my glow and happiness,” she continued. “Maybe my body won’t look like this forever, maybe it will… but however it evolves, I will do it with as much love and kindness as I can. After all, it is fighting as hard as I am to protect and feed me. Maybe your body has changed too, and you’re struggling with it, but a little perspective goes a long way. I love you all.”

Holliday ended her post with the hashtag #EffYourBeautyStandards, a social media movement she started in 2013 to spread body positivity and acceptance.

Holliday’s followers applauded the message. One wrote: “I love you! You are such a wonderful person to look at! I just want to thank you for being yourself.” Another said: “I’m really proud of how far you’ve come. You deserve to thrive. It’s nice to see you so happy.”

Holliday has long been outspoken about the media’s poor treatment of her because of her size. In a recent TikTok, she responded to a commenter who said they were “bored” of their bodies before losing weight and that she looked to Holliday and “other fat people” for inspiration for diet.

“The reality is I’ve gotten fatter over the years, my weight has fluctuated,” Holliday said in the video. “But the one thing I’ve kept throughout all this is my joy. And now I’m fatter than I’ve been in a while, but I’m also happier. There are so many people who have commented recently saying they can see my joy radiating. And that’s how others see me, they see joy. Yes, some people will see the fat and not pay attention to the joy, and if you are showing the world that you are happy with yourself, then more than likely, that is how you will be perceived. .”

In April, Holliday opened up about her struggles with body image, writing in an Instagram post, “I’ll be honest, I’ve been really struggling with body image in a way that I’ve never experienced. It’s been almost debilitating because even though you all see me having fun, sometimes it takes a lot of work and energy just to be able to leave the house.
