LUBBOCK, Texas (KSBD) – Martin Luther King Jr. Day is the only federal holiday dedicated to a day of service. Texas Tech and local volunteers honored that legacy today by lending a helping hand to Habitat for Humanity.
“We’re here today to help build some houses and everything and it’s good to know we can make an impact,” Texas Tech football player Dennis Wilburn said.
Lubbock Habitat for Humanity plans to build 35 more homes on Dartmouth Avenue. The organization was created to provide low-income individuals and families with a place to call home. Today, volunteers helped paint and build fences on homes that are about to be invaded.
“I think it’s amazing to see the vision that Dr. King had, hopefully, slowly but surely,” said Danielle Fest, president of Lubbock Habitat for Humanity.
This is the third year that the Texas Tech football team has volunteered on this project for the MLK Day of Service.
“Days like today are good for the soul and every day should be like today,” head coach Joey McGuire said.
The Texas Tech football team was 5th in the nation in volunteer hours last year, and they’re glad they don’t think of it as service.
“Any time you can do something for the community or somebody else, it puts things into perspective. Everything is bigger than yourself,” McGuire said.
