The Badgers signed Temple transfer Darian Varner from Virginia Tech


Although he signed with Virginia Tech in December, Temple’s defensive end transfer Darian Varner He switched his commitment to Wisconsin.

Varner took an official visit to UW this week. Under NCAA rules, national letters of intent are not linked to transfer recruits until they set foot on campus and attend class, allowing the Badgers to turn in their sophomore redshirt.

A native of Norfolk, Va., Varner had 35 tackles, 12.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, and a forced fumble to earn first-team All-AAC honors in 2022. Against Tulsa in October, Varner recorded a 3.5 sack performance, a career-best, with 5.5 total tackles.

Varner was also pursued by Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and others in the transfer process. He joins a UW defensive line team that returns its top three tight ends from last season – Sr Isaiah MullensJr Johnson TiresAnd second level James Thompson Jr

UW landed four players from the transfer portal in his first year as head coach Luke Fickell. Varner joined the former Oklahoma quarterback Nick EversFormer Boston College defensive back Jason Masterand former SMU quarterback Tanner Mordecai On the Badgers 2023 roster.

247SportsRatings has Varner as a three-star prospect in the transfer portal with an overall rating of 89. Varner has two years of eligibility.
