The construction of Waverly Road caused Lansing’s business problems.

LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – Some businesses in South Lansing say they are struggling to stay open due to construction.

Now they’re asking for the city and the community’s help. During the road project, drivers are still asking for a sign saying they are open for business.

“It’s very difficult for business,” said Khalid Eshkuntana, owner of Siraj Bakery.

Eshkuntana says he has lost about 15% of his customers in this road project.

“It’s hard for my customers to come here from East Lansing, Okemos, like East — with construction. It takes 35-40 minutes to come here,” said Eshkuntana.

Parents of the Little Dreamer Daycare Center said they are leaving their homes early so they can get through the construction.

“It presented a challenge, especially for our families with drop-off and pick-up. And especially with the start of school,” says owner Jacqueline Taylor.

People like Jana Nichols haven’t stopped at Waverly Plaza since the road project began. She said a Facebook post asking for support convinced her to get involved.

“There are no signs to mark and I think that this should be considered better and play a role in the construction process that takes place around the city and in other areas to make sure that these businesses can easily find them. During the construction,” said Nicole.

Lansing City Councilman Adam Hussain asked people to come if they can. He said he is working with the Small Business Development Center to help businesses in Waverly Plaza.

“We’re trying to make sure that these businesses are still open, that everyone knows how to get to them. But I think, frankly, the number one thing we can do as a community is rally around these businesses,” Hussain said.

Hussain said construction in the South Waverley area – from Glenburn to Holmes – will last until November.

Detour signs are posted for southbound drivers at Waverley. There are currently no road closures for northbound drivers on Waverley.
