The Drift Collective in Portsmouth showcases art, fashion and music

Trends come and go instantly, making it seem almost impossible not to play a role in fast fashion. You want the newest ripped t-shirt to wear the hottest neon jeans and as human beings, we want what’s in front of us. With social media, we’re constantly bombarded with the hottest trends and it’s natural to want to be a part of it.

In an effort to make trends ethical, affordable and sustainable, Drift Collective in Portsmouth, New Hampshire is repurposing second-hand clothing to keep up with trends and even make their own.

As their website shares, the mission at Drift is to

“ and recreate used clothing, giving value to unwanted elements and forgotten pieces of good quality.”

This is accomplished by altering, repairing, screen printing, dying, constructing and reconstructing used clothing at home. As they say, affordable need not mean cheap.

Drift Collective has their hands-on store, but there’s more to the art scene: An art house.

Once you have a taste and appreciation for art, most mediums tend to interest you. So if you are into fashion trends, you are probably interested in art and music. Drift combines various creative tools into one space where expressive people of all avenues can enjoy.

Over the weekend, I finally got around to checking it out for myself. What looks like an ordinary house for a family of four from the outside is actually an art gallery inside with a beautiful, enclosed courtyard that welcomes local musicians to showcase their kind of art.

The venue hosts musicians on a wooden pallet stage outside in the courtyard as part of their Drift Backyard series where we can all come together to appreciate art, music, expression and fellowship in a beautiful and intimate setting.

Whether you’re a maker yourself or an appreciator of the various arts, you’ll find something to love at Drift.
