The Mountaineers took the first set 25-18. The Black and Gold got three straight kills from Misron and Denny and a Spartan error to break a 12-12 tie, and were able to get a point against Norfolk State. The Mountaineers further isolated themselves with two three-point runs that included kills from the secondary. Lulu Ambrose And Winterhoff, with a block from junior Meghan Dombrowsi and Winterhoff, and an ace from Bickley, to lead 22-16. A Spartan error and an ace from Winterhoff closed out the first set.
Trailing early in the second set, Upstate got to 4-4 for the Spartans with a kill by the junior. Madison Baldridge. In the third and final set, Upstate came out hot, posting a 6-0 right-handed run to take a 6-1 lead. The Mountaineers’ momentum took them to four straight points, including kills from Denny and two service aces from Winterhoff, to extend their lead to 10-4. . Denny posted another kill to make it 24-12 before the Spartans went on a three-point run of their own, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Mountaineers’ lead. App State took the third set 25-15.
