The Nursing and HIIM departments collaborate on virtual escape rooms

Louisiana Tech University’s Department of Health Informatics and Information Management and Department of Nursing hosted a collaborative project through a virtual escape room where students from both disciplines worked together to solve common issues in the healthcare industry.

The virtual escape rooms provided students with a unique interprofessional, collaborative learning experience that built clinical knowledge and applied management principles.

This project, created by faculty from Louisiana Tech’s Nursing and HIIM departments, introduces students to real-world situations where the Nursing and HIIM departments interact in the healthcare industry.

Lauren Colvin, Instructor “As educators, we want to give our students some hands-on, “real-world” experience by working in a case study setting. Health Informatics and Information Management announced.

Fifteen students from the two programs participated in the virtual escape room program. The “parts” consisted of three topics that challenged students to answer questions related to uncovering an incident in a case study setting, filling out an incident report, and completing a root cause analysis (RCA).

After the activity, students completed the National League of Nurses Self-Esteem Scale to obtain information about the student experience while participating in the project. Melissa Madden, assistant professor in the department of nursing, designed virtual escape rooms for the project and supervised an Institutional Review Board study of the student simulation scale.

“Research indicates that virtual escape room design is an effective teaching method for building students’ confidence in learning and teaching simulation content,” Madden said.
