Same result, different days.
The Philadelphia Phillies were swept by the San Francisco Giants on Sunday in a loss that was just as painful, if not more so, than the other four suffered on this underworld West Coast trip.
Ranger Suarez started on the mound for the Phillies, and was great for three innings before hitting a wall. In the fourth inning, he allowed three runs to cross the plate thanks to two walks and a bunt of singles. It was enough to give the Giants a lead for most of the contest. This is the third consecutive start for Suarez that something has happened in this direction. Deja vu.
The Phillies offense on the other hand had some great scoring opportunities. One came in the second, stranding runners on first and third. Another came in the sixth, where the Phillies loaded the bases with one out, only to see strikeouts from Bryce Harper, Jean Segura and Bryson Stott. Still, they stranded eight runs on base. Deja vu.
There was only one moment when light shone through the clouds hanging over the Fillies’ September thus far. In the top of the eighth inning, with two outs, JT Realmuto launched a no-doubt homer into left field, tying the game at three. For just a moment, the clouds parted and the sun burned a little brighter…

And then, the thunderclap, as Wilmer Flores lined a two-run homer off David Robertson, who had two outs in his second straight inning of work. The Phillies lost. Deja vu.
The clouds closed in once more, and so did a terrible, terrible road trip. The Phillies will have an off day tomorrow before returning for a vital home stretch. They can use the extra time off.
