We’re excited to announce that Mate Fernandez Simon is joining the Business team as Observer Strategy Editor, a new leadership role that will help shape the direction of our expanding technology and business coverage.

Maite brings more than a decade of experience and a deep understanding of The Post and its audience to this important position. Working closely with Erika Allen and the Audience Strategy and Development team, Mayte will guide decisions on what to cover and how to identify strategies to help put readers at the center of our work, including strategies to reach new readers, building loyalty, and leveraging social and search.

Maite, who is currently working as a breaking news reporter abroad as part of the Year of Opportunity program in the news department He joined the Post in 2018 as an operations editor for the foreign and national security teams, researching stories, analyzing traffic data and leading training on digital best practices. . In April 2021, she was promoted to senior operations editor, where she played a major role in live coverage strategies, after Angela Merkel announced her retirement, and in collaboration with category editors for the first German election at the funeral of Prince Philip in Britain.

Prior to joining the post, Maite worked at CQ Roll Call, where she was responsible for audience engagement strategy. She previously worked at the Center for International Journalism as the Communications Director and Managing Editor of IJNet.org, a journalism website published in seven languages. She began her career as a general category reporter for the national newspaper El Observador in Montevideo, Uruguay.

A native of Uruguay, Maite earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from ORT University before earning her master’s degree in multimedia journalism from the University of Maryland. In the year In 2020, she was selected for a year-long Women’s Leadership Accelerator run by the Online News Association. She lives in Gaithersburg, MD, with her husband, Justin, their two children, and the family dog, Uzi. A native Spanish speaker and avid runner, Mayte enjoys cooking in her spare time.
