For every passionate Burn Man participant, there are three equally passionate enemies waiting in the wings to shoot down Twitter about the people who chose to spend a week on the playa.

And this year, after Covid-19 made Burning Man a digital-only festival, the festival is back in full force – and so are the attendees.

In recent years, a new level of outrage has opened up—not at the hippies and faith-fund kids who have made Burning Man a libertarian-leaning cultural event. Instead, the VCs and tech bros who have come to love the festival in recent years have borne the brunt of the criticism. After all, entry fees of up to $2,500 are probably nothing to a startup founder who has raised millions in seed-level funding — or a VC throwing money at said startup founder.

As fast as the tech industry deals with economic problems, that doesn’t seem to be stopping Silicon Valley’s 1% from going. San Francisco residents and tech industry watchers have noticed how empty city streets have been this week, or how quiet Twitter has been.
