Three shot at Oakland Tech during a youth football game

Three people were shot and wounded at a youth football game at Oakland Technical High School Sunday afternoon, including a city council member, and Oakland police confirmed “multiple” victims, including a teenager, were killed.

A man in his 30s, a 5-year-old girl and a woman in her 50s were shot, according to an Oakland police source who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to release information about the case.

“Today, once again, we see the results of too many guns and too little gun reform. A gunman opened fire during a Pei Wei football game at Oakland Tech, injuring at least 3 people,” Councilman Sheng Tao wrote on Facebook. “These cowardly acts of violence are intolerable and must not be tolerated!”

A statement from the Oakland Police Department said the victims were “transported to area hospitals for treatment” and are all listed in stable condition. The statement did not confirm the number of victims and their ages. “The shooting occurred during a youth football game at Oakland Technical High School’s football stadium,” the statement said.

Just before 1:20 p.m., police responded to the field where about 500 people were attending a youth soccer game, a police source said.

The attack took place during a youth soccer match between the Oakland Dynamite and the Fresno team, the source said. According to the Oakland Dynamite website, the youth team was scheduled to play the Fresno Traveling Youth Soccer team against the Valley Boys on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Oakland Technical High School. A police source said the shooting was not related to the football game.

The Oakland Police investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to contact the Oakland Police Crime Squad at 510-238-3426.
