Tim Cook responded to a reporter’s question about text messaging at the 2022 code conference RCS by suggesting they buy an iPhone, The Verge reported. When asked how Apple would improve the relationship between iPhone and Android users, he said, “I don’t hear our people asking us to pay more attention. “Buy your mom an iPhone,” Cook joked when the reporter said he couldn’t email some movies to his Android-using mother.

This is sure to spark debate over standard smartphone texting. Google has long been pushing, and shamelessly promoting, RCS (Rich Communication Services) as a solution to improve compatibility between iOS and Android users.
This helps avoid the dreaded “green bubble” that iPhone users experience when receiving text messages from an Android phone.
Internal documents obtained during Epic’s lawsuit show that Apple considered introducing iMessage to Android users, but quickly abandoned the idea. Former Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller said bringing iMessage to Android would “hurt us more than it helped,” while another former Apple executive said in an email that “iMessage is the equivalent of a real lock-in.”
Cook indicated that Apple isn’t talking about RCS “at this time,” but he didn’t completely abandon the idea. In any case, the problem of the green bubble is mainly limited to the United States, as users in other countries prefer non-SMS apps like Telegram, WhatsApp, and Signal.
