Trussville’s sculpture business sees an increase in sales after a popular outcry

Trussville, Ala. (WBRC) – Cahaba Cut is a local business and passion project for Nick Garrett. Over the years he has created artwork for professional baseball players as well as Tennessee Titans and Tide legend Derek Henry.

However, it is one of his latest creations that has turned heads from across the country.

It was a few years in the making. Garrett’s grandfather helped him develop his interest in woodworking from an early age, but it wasn’t until last week that thousands of others realized Garrett’s talents.

“I came home to lunch one day last week and all of a sudden, I got notifications that like ten dozen people were visiting my website, from all over the country,” Garrett said.

That’s because Garrett sent a free sculpt to Nickmerx, one of the most popular video game streams on the planet. Merces has millions of followers on Twitch, YouTube, and TikTok, and has performed and perfected sculptures while streaming online.

“I’m on the floor there because Nick has such a huge following and there are tens of thousands of people watching live on any given day,” Garrett said.

Since then, Cahaba’s cutters have been flooded with attention and Garrett’s custom order slots have all been filled.

“I posted the video on TikTok showing how I made the piece, and it just took off. I mean, I think over 400,000 people have seen it. 4,000 people followed me on the night, which was unbelievable.”

Each sculpture takes a lot of time, some more than twelve hours. It’s easy to see why when you hear the process.

“I create a design template on my iPad that I just follow the black and white lines with the saw. Then I cut it on the saw. Then after that point it’s just painting each individual piece and gluing it all together. Then I figure out how I want to place it and lay it on the actual frame.”

With increased demand, Garrett plans to expand his passion project and acquire materials to make more projects possible.
