What a weekend for the Virginia Tech Hokies! After three commitments from members of the 2023 recruiting class, including quarterback William “Pop” Watson, the Hokies received more good news Monday night.
First, Old Dominion wide receiver Ali Jennings — the top wide receiver in the NCAA transfer portal — is on the Hokies’ 5 p.m. We’ll have more on Jennings, which deserves its own post, but the biggest domino fell at 6 p.m. when former Baylor quarterback Kyron Drones took to Twitter to announce he was coming to Virginia Tech.
What a coup for head coach Brent Pry. Drones, 6-foot-2, 223 pounds, played high school football at Shadow Creek High in Pearland, Texas. In the year He redshirted in 2021 and appeared in five games, completing 14 of 23 passes for 219 yards with one touchdown and an interception. The Drones also carried the football eight times for 49 yards and two touchdowns.
Drones were one of the first passengers in the transfer portal. Drones have three years of eligibility remaining.
Prayuth and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen deserve major props for identifying the drones as their primary target and closing the deal to make sure it ends up in Blacksburg.
Interestingly, the Hokies will get a quarterback from Texas in the same class that former Dematrius Davis did. The two were rated the same before Davis returned his pledge to the Hokies and committed to Auburn.
Did we mention that drones are getting big time? Drones are perfect for the offense Bowen wants to run. And he didn’t transfer to Virginia Tech to compete with Grant Wells. Drones are the starting quarterback. As far as Wales, the coaches understand that he didn’t have much help last season; That is why such emphasis is placed on the wide reception area in the portal and in the recruitment department.
