Women-owned businesses in Toronto are on display. News, sports, jobs



Warren Scott Showcase for Business – Abby LeMasters, owner of Tri B Coffee Shop, invited several women-owned businesses from the Toronto area to donate their properties and provide information about the services they have in her business and outside of Clark Street. It was music from a trio of two friends.

TORONTO – Abby, owner of Tri B Coffee Shop, wanted to spotlight the many new local businesses opened by women in Masters, and she made a big deal of inviting everyone inside and outside of her work to gather at the Clark. Street on October 15th.

In January, a coffee shop opened on North Fourth Street at the same time as Meraki Made, a custom-made clothing store across the street, and the owners handed out business cards to their visitors.

While the promotion effort isn’t extensive, it shows a willingness to help each other out among many small business owners in Game City, LeMasters said.

“It is extremely important that we all support each other. It benefits everyone. She said she hopes to hold similar events for each season next year.

With the cooperation of city officials, a small section of Clark Street was blocked off and staged for live music from a trio of two friends.

Among the many with booths on the street is the REC Fitness Center, which was opened by Corey Clegg in 2020 in the Karafa Recreation Center at 1307 Dennis Way, but was forced to close shortly after due to the pandemic.

Crystal Wickham Jim, one of three instructors there, continues to serve the public with online classes streamed through social media.

“We did as much as we could to reopen.” She said.

Open Monday through Saturday, offering day and night workouts, the center’s offerings include spin classes that use stationary bikes for muscle toning. Step routines using light weights and for low or high intensity.

Visitors to the center range in age from 21 to 71, and upgrades are available for beginners, Wickham said.

Alicia Trosky, who owns First Class Publishing and Design with her husband, Jeremy; The business opened in 2011 but has moved to 1102 Franklin St. in recent years.

She said crocheted items, including customized Christmas stockings, jackets and other apparel, have been added to the product line.

Leslie Robbins of Leslie’s Dog Grooming and Doggie Things, located at 906 Banfield Ave., was on hand.

Robbins said she has been cooking dogs for 30 years, 20 of them in Toronto, before returning to her hometown to raise her son.

In the year A 1974 graduate of Toronto High School and an Army National Guard veteran, she said her focus is on small to medium-sized dogs and she is available on weekdays, evenings and Saturdays to accommodate working people.

Not all of the businesses shown have brick and mortar locations. Some work from home while others bring their services to their clients.

Among the latter was pretty rad. Owned by sisters Mallory and Nicole Radwanski, the sisters offer cosmetic treatments that include Botox and dermal filler injections for crow’s feet, fine lines and other signs of aging.

The two board-certified nurse practitioners explained that they work in partnership with the local physician to provide their services as required by law. They’ve set up a website and Facebook pages to reach out to customers, adding that treatments like this are more popular than commonly believed and are happy to make them available locally.

Kayla Wedlak joined to spread the word about her photography business. As of 2019, she says she’s been working from her home in Toronto, bringing her eyes as far as Cleveland and Pittsburgh for weddings and other special events.

Wedlak, a 2010 Edison High School graduate, offers photos of high school seniors and babies and more, as well as familiar pets in their final days at no cost.

Cara Makeup Cara Eltringham has played a role in helping women look their best with makeup at weddings and other special events, including high school dances. She helped students prepare for their senior photos.

Alex Taylor of Pretty Poppin’ Parties and Kathy Sabol of KJ Special Party Planning both offer ways to make a birthday or other party special.

Taylor has created balloon towers and walls for everything from weddings to graduation or retirement parties and has booked many for this year and next since opening in May.

Taylor, a former television journalist and Toronto resident, said she started the business while taking time off to focus on her family.

In the year Sobol, a 1975 graduate of Toronto High School, said she can come up with low tables, soft pillows and other accessories for adult-themed parties or beautiful tablecloths, runners and other decorations for clients’ furniture.

For kids, she offers mini teepees with blankets and pillows, creating a camp effect for parties with themes ranging from superheroes and dinosaurs to mermaids and ladybugs.

Promoting merchandise from their homes, online businesses, or local festivals: Krista Beswick and Alicia Myslinski of Zazazu Boutique, which sells women’s clothing and children’s clothing to customers across the US. Mira Payne of Mira’s Miracle Plant, which sells a variety of houseplants, scented wipes, handmade wreaths and other items, and more; and Jessica Winters of Stella Creek Candle Company, who makes scented candles from her home in Toronto.

Winters said she thought about starting her own business, named for her grandmother, and after selling all of the merchandise brought to the Toronto Art Festival in 2016, she realized it was the right move.

Trosky said the event is a sign that a new generation of entrepreneurs is interested in doing business in Toronto, which is a positive development for the city.

Alberta Chesney was among the residents who were excited to see the event and the vendors. We need stuff like this in Toronto.
