ST. George, Utah – The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV) Vaqueros women’s soccer team held the Utah Tech Trailblazers off the board for 85 minutes on Sunday at Greater Zion Stadium, but scored a late goal to fall 1-0.
The game was still scoreless at 86.Th At the minute, Emily Garbett’s shot from across the box found the UTRGV goalkeeper on the right side. Emily Schroeder (0-3) to give the Trailblazers (6-2-0, 2-0-0 WAC) the game winner.
“I thought we put a lot into the game,” said the UTRGV head coach. Mark Foster he said. “There was only one game in the game where we didn’t do it and they capitalized on it with some good balls. I thought it would have been a draw but that’s the way the game is sometimes. We’re looking forward to getting back home and back on our own pitch next week.
The Vaqueros (2-7, 0-2-0 WAC) held the Trailblazers for most of the match behind five saves by Schroeder.
Utah Tech outshot UTRGV 14-to-4 and 6-to-3, and three of the Vaqueros’ only shots on goal came late in the game, but Kayla Thompson stopped all three of her shutout attempts.
The Vaqueros return to action on Friday, September 23 when they host the New Mexico State Aggies at 6:30 pm at the UTRGV Football and Track & Field Complex.
