Om Shanti Om (2007) completed 15 years on November 9. The film had a fantastic album and it’s no surprise that its songs continue to remain popular even today. Each and every song was special, but ‘Dhoom Taana’ stood out. It showed lead actress Deepika Padukone romancing yesteryear actors like Sunil Dutt, Rajesh Khanna etc. The cutting-edge VFX as well as the old-school-type sound of the song created a tremendous impact.

Om Shanti Om’s writer Mushtaq Shaikh wrote a book ‘The Making Of Om Shanti Om’, in which he has revealed how this classic song was recorded. Mushtaq says music composer duo Vishal-Shekhar realized that they’ll have to work with 200 musicians to get the desired effect. But they had no experience in doing so and they wondered how Laxmikant-Pyarelal would have handled it. Suddenly, they thought of bringing Pyarelal on board.

Vishal-Shekhar approached him ‘nervously’, writes Mushtaq. Thankfully, Pyarelal liked the song and enjoyed their work in Bluffmaster (2005). Pyarelal demanded that he’ll need 3-4 days for rehearsal and 3-4 days to record the song. On day 1 of the recording, 50 people were seated with dhols, tablas, sitar, and guitars with the legendary composer on the piano. Mushtaq states that Vishal-Shekhar were taken aback by the old-school way of music rehearsals and how Pyarelal coordinated seamlessly with the team.

‘Dhoom Taana’ was then recorded at Yash Raj Studios with 200 musicians. Like in the yesteryear era, the recording began at 8:30 am and went on till 10:30 pm, that too without a single break!

Mushtaq Shaikh then confesses that Pyarelal was upset with Om Shanti Om’s team as he was not called for the mixing process; he felt that he would have helped them at this stage. What also disappointed him was that the makers forgot to give him credit in the cassettes and music CDs of Om Shanti Om. At the same time, he said, “But at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter for when people will hear the song, they’ll know it’s Laxmikant-Pyarelal, kyunki beta jab biryani pakate hotoh ghosh daalna nahin bhulte!”

Later, Pyarelal was touched when Shah Rukh personally visited him to thank him for the song and also when Vishal-Shekhar apologized for the goof-up.

Om Shanti Om was directed by Farah Khan and her end-credit songs feature all the members of the cast and crew. The makers were sweet enough to call Pyarelal and thus, he was given the rightful credit.
