When the first Ghost Rider used his Penance Stare on Namor, he tapped into sins that technically hadn’t been committed yet in that timeline.
Marvel Comics has always had a peculiar relationship with time travel, and Ghost Rider’s Penance Stare in the newest Avengers series is an example of the exact reasons why.
For a time, all of reality was under grave threat by a version of Dr. Doom calling himself Doom Supreme. He rallied a bunch of other powerful villains across the multiverse to create the multiversal Masters of Evil. They had been traveling across the multiverse and conquering realities. A mysterious figure known as Avenger Prime brought together a force of multiversal Avengers in order to oppose them. They were to do battle on Earth 616 during the time of the prehistoric Avengers.
Things start to get underway in Avengers Assemble Alpha #1 by Jason Aaron, Bryan Hitch, Andrew Currie, and Alex Sinclair. The modern-day Avengers travel back in time in preparation for the battle. They encounter the prehistoric Avengers of that era, and there is immediate tension between the two groups. A fight breaks out despite Captain America trying to calm things down. Ghost Rider clashes with Namor and is able to use his Penance Stare on him, which causes Namor to experience great pain from all of the sins he had caused in his lifetime.
Ghost Rider May Be Able To Transcend Time
This brings in a bunch of questions regarding Ghost Rider’s Penance Stare and how time travel works in the Marvel Universe. Technically, the things Ghost Rider is using to punish Namor with are from his future, even though they are from Namor’s past. So his Penance Stare is tapping into the future along this current timeline in order to cause Namor pain. This is strange because in the Marvel Universe the future is constantly in flux, as seen because there are so many different possible futures that have been depicted. This begs the question whether the main Marvel timeline where most of the books take place is a permanent staple that can’t be altered.
Interestingly enough, Mephisto during this run of The Avengers has stated that he exists in all parts of time at once. He is aware of his future and past selves simultaneously. Perhaps Ghost Rider operates in a similar manner. If the Spirit of Vengeance is able to tap into his own future in order to punish those with his Penance Stare, then maybe he has access to the sins not just of his past but his future, as well. Either way, this Penance Stare and time travel conundrum is an interesting question that Marvel can certainly explore more in future Avengers issues.
