Ensley Fairfield Mattress Co. It served the city of Birmingham for more than a century, weathering the stock market crash of 1929 and two world wars.
But in January, the mattress company, owned by three generations of the Holtclaw family and that made the bed from the Ford Model T, said goodbye after more than 107 years in business.
“With this transition, our family knows the time is right to close our last retail store in Alabama,” the company said in a statement. “We can focus on the economy, forced pandemic restrictions, rising costs, administrations, or many other challenges that affect small businesses every day. Instead, we choose to look back at all the good things we have achieved in our 107 years of work.
Ensley Fairfield Mattress was started in 1915 by Louis H. and Dixie A. Holtzclaw out of a small warehouse on Avenue E in the Ensley/Fairfield area after South Carolina residents helped Louis’ brother open a mattress factory in Montgomery.
“When our company was created on the old soil of the factory, Louie and Dixie had no idea of the legacy they were creating. All they had in mind was to give Birmingham the best of the best options while sleeping,” the announcement continued. “They were focused on what the customer was telling them and what they needed to sell.” Each generation has continued that legacy to the end.
The company, which now operates out of Pelham, has employed hundreds of workers over the years. His delivery trucks have logged millions of miles in the Birmingham metro.
“We like to be a little bit involved in people’s lives when they’re at their happiest or when they’re rebuilding,” the business said. “No matter who walks through our doors, we appreciate the opportunity to earn their business and thank them for choosing to shop with a local company.”
