Houghton, Mich. (WLUC) – This morning for the first meeting of the new year, the Houghton Chamber of Commerce sat down to discuss upcoming plans and projects.

Among the topics discussed, City Manager Eric Wara gave an overview of the upcoming parking lot removal downtown above East Lake Shore.

“We’re shooting somewhere in there in late March, early April, so hopefully the main demolition will be done by Memorial Day summer,” Wara said. “And then we can start working on the surface.”

According to Wara, it will take demolition crews six to eight weeks to remove the deck. They start in the east section next to the Portage Lake District Library.

“After that,” Wara continued, “they will begin to work on improvements to the surface, planting sidewalks and green spaces, with small utilities, but not as a classic utility project.”

The remaining space includes additional parking and pedestrian areas such as lawns and gardens.

Another topic that came up at the meeting was the return of the Jabba Jabba ice skating event after more than a decade.

The event will turn the lower half of Heron St into a skating rink course, with the help in part of the Rhythm Bike and Board Company.

15 to 20 talented Midwest snowboarders will perform in front of an audience and aim for $1,000 in prize money for the men’s and women’s divisions.

“The Sheldon Avenue section will be closed to traffic for safety reasons,” said Jane Reed, operations manager for Rhythm Bike and Board Company. “And hopefully the course will go all the way to our pole. It’s invitation only, so they’ll be the only ones arriving that night.”

However, some may still have the opportunity to use it.

“We really push for the community to be able to ride next day,” Reed continued. “You’ll have to sign a waiver, but we’ll let you know as we get closer to the event and keep it open for a while.”

Jabba Jabba will be staged on Saturday, February 18 from 6 p.m.
