Let’s start with the obvious truth: hardware is hard. We’ve all heard the cliché — and implicitly understood it to be true. The good news is that problems like these give us plenty to talk about – and as it happens, for the first time hardware is getting its own stage at Disruption 2023.
Hitting San Francisco’s Moscow Center September 19-21, 2023, this event will shake up the scene you know and love. That’s right, my friends, riots are happening and we are the rioters. We’re adding six industry stages to the show, each focused on a TechCrunch coverage: AI, FinTech, Hardware, SaaS, Security and Sustainability.
What that means, in practical terms, is that each of these categories is getting a full day of stage programming – panels, firemen, the whole nine. Now you might say, “Brian, first of all, this is great news, and second, it’s impossible to cover all hardware at once. To that I say, first of all, thank you, and after all, yes, this is a very intelligent and well-reasoned question, but as problems go, it’s a good one to have.
Like any broad category, happiness tends to ebb and flow. I would argue that we are currently moving towards the latter. It’s been a rough couple of years for hardware in general – and like anything in this world, the other end is changing. Trust me, you’ll want to tune in for this one.
Robotics has come to the fore in recent years—in fact, the last three have been among the most exciting in the history of the category. Automation is on the verge of changing every aspect of our lives, for better and for worse. It’s already a revolution well underway, and we examine the topic from some novel angles.
I’m equally excited to finally be giving consumer electronics the love it deserves on the disruptive stage. We are talking on mobile. We are talking about AR/VR/MR. We are talking about space. We are talking about hardware investment, design and manufacturing. Like the rest of you, we really love discussing what’s next for smartphones after several years. Apple is expected to announce the headset in June, the XR scene is set to blow wide.
Meanwhile, supply chain constraints and security concerns have many rethinking how the world manufactures. And as for space, it seems to be big, cold, and ever-expanding. With each passing day there is more to talk about.
