Starting point. The Association of Business and Human Rights Lawyers was launched by 22 international law firms to promote business and human rights leadership, learning, collaboration and practice among business law firms and business lawyers around the world.
“The formation of this association is both timely and overdue,” BHRLA Co-Chair Ray Lindsay said in a press release. “There is a need to accelerate the dissemination of good practices in the field of business and human rights at the international level by business lawyers.”
Early work. The group promotes awareness in the business and legal communities of the responsibility to respect human rights and the need for lawyers to incorporate business and human rights advice into their client services in a manner consistent with their professional responsibilities.
“The formation of the association reflects the commitment of 22 of the world’s leading law firms to provide companies with high-level legal advice on business and human rights issues,” said BHRLA Co-Chairman Douglas Cassel.
Next steps. BHRLA plans to provide educational and engagement activities including seminars, publications, conferences and sharing of best practices.
Going forward, BHRLA seeks to expand its membership and international footprint to include lawyers and attorneys practicing in other settings.
