The fashion industry is one of the top three causes of climate change in the world, emitting more emissions annually than the transport and aviation industries. combined.

The rise of online shopping and the constant pressure to keep up with changing trends has resulted in an increase in low-quality, cheap clothing designed to be worn a few times before being replaced. In 2020, more than 100 billion new clothes were made worldwide with less than 1% of them being recycled into new items and sent to landfill instead.

In an effort to combat fast fashion’s growing environmental toll, local event organizer Louiza Hebhardt has created ‘Slow Fashion September’ – a month-long series of curated events that promotes sustainability and encourages the community to better understand shopping Theirs. habits and the effects they can have.

Now in its second year, more than sixty local South Australian businesses have signed up to get involved through markets, mystery bus rides, workshops and information sessions, all with the sole aim of educating and raising awareness about the issue. This year will see events stretching across the state from the CBD and surrounding regions, from Fleurieu to the Flinders Ranges.

“Slow Fashion September is going to be bigger and better than ever this year,” says Naked Pony event organizer Louiza Hebhardt. “Vintage, upcycled, handmade, upcycled, repurposed: we look forward to showcasing slow fashion and sustainable living in all its forms, and there really will be something for everyone to learn and enjoy.”
