Douglas Road reopens trade bonus ahead of ND home opener.

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. (WNDU) – Commuters around Michiana no longer have to rely on rides to navigate a major road closure in northern St. Joseph County.

On Tuesday, Douglas Road reopened between Twyckenham Drive and SR 23. Notre Dame football’s home opener at Marshall is just days away.

“For example, there’s a fair amount of hotels and restaurants that depend on game day traffic – and it’s not always the best to get visitors to turn around, it’s the best thing, so we’re happy to see it back open,” he said. Jeff Rea, CEO of the South Bend Area Chamber of Commerce

Nur Hadzimesic, associate director of sales for the Inn at St. Mary’s and Hilton Garden Inn-South Bend, said the reopening of Douglas Road will improve shuttle bus and guest traffic.

“I think it will definitely make things more convenient for our guests who come for the football weekend. They want to go to Mishawaka for lunch before going to the game or whatever the case may be.

County officials said as drivers approached Ironwood, Douglas Road narrowed to two lanes and was restricted to two lanes until it reached SR 23.

Ironwood Road is closed north and south of Douglas Road due to construction on the Juday Creek Bridge. Officials expect to reopen Ironwood by the end of October.
