It almost looks like it. Too good to be honest: Take the basalt dust wasted today in the production of things like asphalt shingles, sprinkle it on farmers’ fields, and it will increase crop yields and remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
Where is it held?
For everything to work, farmers need to add the right amount of basalt. Very little and they do not capture much carbon and their crops do not show any benefit. Too much and the field can release carbon instead of removing it. Soils are complex systems.
The team at Lithos Carbon thought they had cracked the code. Working with farmers in the US Midwest and Southeast, they have sequestered more than 2,000 tons of carbon this year.
The startup announced a $6.3 million seed round led by Union Square Ventures and Greylock Partners with participation from Bain Capital Ventures, Carbon Removal Partners, Carbon Drawdown Initiative, Fall Line Capital and Cavallo Ventures. It’s their first climate investment for Greylock and Bain.
