Harry Styles evolves from heartthrob to fashion icon

COMMENTARY

Harry Styles will never be just a singer-songwriter, he’s now an actor and a fashion powerhouse as well.

The former member of British pop boy band One Direction has shed his musician skin for the male lead alongside Oscar nominee Florence Pugh in the highly anticipated dystopian thriller Don’t Worry Darling. directed by Olivia Wilde.

The film had its sensational world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on Monday, taking the internet and the world by storm with behind-the-scenes controversy and, above all, fashion.

Styles arrived on the Venice carpet in a navy blue Gucci suit with wide, bold shoulders and a very high collar, Sarah Karmali, executive editor (digital) at Harper’s Bazaar, described to The Associated Press.

Laura Jordan, fashion and lifestyle director at Grazia magazine, said Styles’ partnership with his designer Harry Lambert has created “absolute magic”.

“(Styles’ fashion) always has this kind of retro bit camp vibe. He loves the big collar, the painted shades, lots and lots of Gucci,” Jordan said.

In 2018, Styles began building his personal style and brand by becoming one of the ambassadors of the Italian fashion house Gucci. Styles has worn the brand in several editorial campaigns, but the most notable was the dress he wore for the November 2020 cover of Vogue. The musician-actor was the fashion magazine’s first male solo cover star.

The much-talked-about cover depicted Styles on a green open field under clear skies and wearing a blue Gucci Alessandro Michele-designed dress, lined with black lace for a contrast, multiple tiers of ruffles, and topped off with all – a classic black sports jacket.

Since his transition from boy band member to solo artist with multiple best-selling albums, he’s become synonymous with a cool look — a colorful array of ’70s-inspired three-piece suits and skirted jumpsuits flashing bells and an occasional feather boa, imitating the likes of Elton John.

Every outfit for the Love On Tour 2022, which currently includes an impressive 15-date stint at New York’s Madison Square Garden, sparks a pattern—literally.

Dressed exclusively in Gucci every night, Styles wore a two-piece jumpsuit filled with different patterns, ranging from stripes to polka dots, all in different colors like bright shades of red, pink, blue and yellow.

If there’s one takeaway from the evolution of Styles’ personal wardrobe, it’s that it’s personal, eclectic, and above all, fun.

“Harry Styles knows exactly who Harry Styles is,” Jordan said.
