How to recreate the line this fall for less

New seasons bring new beginnings but also new challenges. Every fall, I’m faced with the same one: How can I recreate The Row without spending a million bazillion dollars?? The answer for me is almost always twofold. First stop: Uniqlo. Second stop: my mirror, where I try to style my Uniqlo car using the tools I have on hand, like belts, bags and shoes. Uniqlo basics fit well with The Row’s minimalist aesthetic. (See also: COS, Everlane, and Frankie Shop.) Of course, there’s no match for The Row’s quality. But with some accessories and styling tricks – upsizing, downsizing, layering, etc. – I can get the silhouette very close. And since The Row recently introduced colors other than neutrals (gasp!), I have a lot more options to work with this season (even though I can’t find the same perfect shade of purple). Below, my attempts to recreate Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen’s fall 2022 look for less.

Organic Cotton Lined Fedrino Top

A perfectly cut but not too cut blouse with a plunging neckline with a frayed hem. I have a sweatshirt in the same color from Entireworld (RIP), and it’s much more vibrant than the other greens in my closet.

Frankie Shop Karina T-shirt with cotton jersey

Unfortunately, this version is a bit more fitted, but you can size up and shorten the sleeves, as the original has frayed hems, or simply wear the pants higher in the waist.

Babaà jumper no59 wild fern

Since the original is a t-shirt, this delicate knit might be a better transition into fall, and Babaà’s colors are just as rich.

Row Ciba Cashmere Top

I’ve never been more convinced that pumpkin is actually chic. (Pumpkin spice, everything is normally very sticky!)

Polo Ralph Lauren Stretch Ribbed Turtleneck

It’s hard to find an orange that isn’t striking, but this reddish hue from Polo is flattering. It may not be as soft as The Row’s cashmere, but you can easily layer it under a purple sweater and a white button-down shirt, as the brand does in its lookbook.

Lou Lou Studio Murano Cashmere Sweater

It’s a lot, but still $1000 cheaper!

The Row Slouchy Banana Bag Two in Nylon

Prada has me hooked on nylon, but they don’t currently offer a bag with such a natural shape as this one, and I appreciate how this one doesn’t have any logos or lettering.

Uniqlo Round Mini Shoulder Bag

Becky Malinsky’s shopping newsletter turned me on to this bag. You really can’t beat that price!

Row Ciles Top with organic cotton

I chose to recreate this complete look myself because it seemed more doable. A red long-sleeved shirt, a belt and black pleated trousers – how hard can it be?

Uniqlo Extra Fine Merino Crew Neck Long Sleeve Sweater

Whether you’re trying to recreate the Row look or not, these slim sweaters are great for fall layering and come in a variety of different colors. I have at least four.

Guest in Residence Oversize Crew

Gigi Hadid just launched her DTC cashmere brand, Guest in Residence, and it has a ton of great colors and fits, including this oversized red sweater.

Isabel Marant Black Zap Leather Belt

I’ve had this Isabel Marant belt for years and years now, and I wear it with all my pants.

Uniqlo wide pleated pants

When I found these online, I immediately bought them. It’s hard to find baggy pants that don’t look flattering on me, and these have a cinched waist and don’t flare out or look too baggy.

Look, mom! I’m a Row Model! Joking. I wish (For one, if I were a Row model, I wouldn’t be smiling.) In retrospect, I probably should have done a few things differently. Here are my suggestions:

  • Size up with your sweaters. The wider the better when it comes to perfecting the Row look.
  • Wear black sneakers. (I’m addicted to color coordination, so I’m wearing red, but the Row look is all black.)
  • No markings on the pants (10/10), but you can go up a size if you want to look more “trendy”. Uniqlo also does free alterations!
  • Buy a raffle ticket for a chance to win the real thing. It is really beautiful, quality clothing.
