Massive fire, explosion destroys business in South Fulton warehouse

Firefighters continue to work to extinguish a massive fire that destroyed a South Fulton warehouse early Tuesday morning.

Officials say the fire started just before 3 a.m. Tuesday at Atlanta Custom Metal Works in the 100 block of Selig Drive.

Firefighters who responded to the scene said they found the building fully engulfed in flames and heard a series of explosions coming from inside the business.

Lt. Eric Jackson of the South Fulton Fire Department told FOX 5 that they learned the business contained hazardous materials that may have contributed to the fire.

“While we were fighting the fire, we received information from the company owner that they had propane, oxygen or forklifts that run on propane,” he said. “So we knew we weren’t going to send our firefighters.”

After hours of battling the blaze, crews were able to successfully extinguish the blaze. Firefighters plan to remain on the scene until the morning to extinguish hot spots and watch for sparks.

Authorities said no one was injured in the fire. Two businesses connected on either side of Atlanta Custom Metal Works were damaged, but not seriously.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
