In the year In the fall of 2020, the Salt Lake City Department of Airports (SLCDA) opened the first phase of the new SLC Airport – the first new major hub airport built in America in the 21st century. The new SLC is designed and built with a flexible, right-sized design that is more efficient, sustainable and cost-competitive in the future. It is also designed to set a standard for environmentally responsible airports. Sustainable design strategies aimed at reducing the airport’s environmental footprint include high-performance glazing, daylighting, energy-efficient mechanical and lighting systems, and efficient configuration of terminal and gate areas to reduce fuel use and aircraft emissions. SLCDA’s efforts have not gone unnoticed and have been recognized with LED Gold certification in 2021. Phases 2 and 3, which are currently under construction, are also in the process of acquiring LED Gold.

With sustainability at the forefront of every decision, Nova’s flagship data center in West Jordan was designed to run year-round without water, use solar energy and be atmospherically cooled. As a result of these green practices, the facility has earned LEED Silver certification from the US Green Building Council, a top honor legitimizing the facility’s sustainability efforts. A unique feature of the flagship facility is a water-free cooling system that utilizes a combination of raised floors surrounding air and heat exchange bottles. Additionally, the facility is outfitted with countless green design features including artificial turf to reduce unnecessary water use, refillable water bottle stations, electric vehicle charging stations, and recycling facilities to promote an overall green mindset among employees. The data center is an example of how thoughtful design can go a long way when creating green facilities.

Nu Skin focuses on being environmentally friendly in its business practices and community leadership. In the year By 2030, the company has committed to making all product packaging reusable, renewable, reusable, recyclable or reduceable. In 2021 alone, Nu Skin’s repackaging and sustainability initiatives have saved 118.2 tons of plastic and 33.1 tons of paper. Nu Skin is the first beauty company to use an eco-pack made from 100 percent Bio-PE (a bio-based plastic resin derived from sugar cane), with 83 percent less carbon emissions and an average of 10 percent less plastic per product. A product recycling bin named after Nu Skin’s global headquarters recycled 179.8 tons of materials in 2021 alone. Nu Skin leads sustainability efforts in the state of Utah by establishing and leading the Utah Sustainable Business Alliance with Adobe and Young Living, which empowers businesses and communities to make the world a better place. In five years, the coalition has grown to more than 300 members statewide.

Shop SLC, the premier co-working space for the creative professional, has made history by opening the first carbon-neutral co-working space in the city. Here, groups large and small come together under one roof to share furniture, technology, coffee makers and ideas. The shop extends sustainability beyond construction through a series of partnerships and initiatives, including relationships with Momentum Recycling and Atlas Disposal for proper recycling, as well as sponsoring a nearby GREENBike station. His workplace roots are growing, promoting eco-oriented charities such as Green City Lunchbox and the Utah Sustainable Business Coalition. These partnerships strengthen the store’s role in local communities by pledging to offer locally sourced products for purchase in the workplace marketplace.

One of Utah’s most influential and trusted clean air and climate change organizations, Utah Clean Energy, started as a small group of passionate volunteers working around a kitchen table on climate issues. In the year When it merged in 2002, the state had zero wind and solar farms, almost zero solar homes, and talking about climate change in the halls of the Utah State Capitol requires walking a political tightrope. Utah now has enough renewable energy to power nearly 700,000 Utah homes, energy efficiency is an energy priority, and Utah leaders from across party lines are discussing climate change risks and solutions. Over the past 20 years, Utah Clean Energy has been recognized as the state’s leading expert in climate, clean energy and air quality solutions. The organization’s mission is to lead and accelerate clean energy change through vision and knowledge, and it has supported those ideas in dozens of projects on solar power, electric vehicles, healthy homes, energy and equity, climate policy, and more.
