Nobilio wins Women’s English Open in Playoff Fashion

HAZELSLADE, England – Redshirt sophomore Alessia Nobilio won the English Women’s Amateur Championship in playoff fashion at Beau Desert Golf Club on Sunday. Representing her native Italy, Nobilio birdied the third extra hole to beat Denmark’s Christina Thouber.

Nobilio, who shot 74-68-74-71 for the tournament, carded the 71st and 72nd holes to tie Thouber at +7 over par going into extra holes.

To get to that point, Nobilio was tasked with an up-and-down putt on the par-5 18th hole after hitting a greenside bunker on her approach shot.

“On 18, I was really nervous. I know I had that chance (to force a playoff),” Nobilio said. “I hit it into the green and missed it, but I’m good at bunker shots, so I thought I could make birdie.”

She did just that, hitting an eight-foot putt.

Nobilio sealed the victory with a 20-foot birdie putt down and over the slope on the third extra playoff hole at the par-4 1st. Nobilio received the silverware in front of her father, Alfonso Nobilio, who was not watching. to compete for two years.

“I wish I could spend more time with him on the golf course,” Nobilio said. I grew up with him on the course and it’s a big thanks to him. I would also like to dedicate this victory to my grandfather, Dante, who has not been well recently and also to my mother Chiara, who I know was cheering me on from Italy”.

This marks Nobilio’s first win of the offseason heading into her sophomore year.
