After 23 years, this is my last personal technology page. Dallas Morning News.
For those of you who don’t know, I don’t work directly. Dallas Morning News. My day job is at the University of Texas at Dallas.
Before that I worked in the IT department The news For 20 years, I have seen many changes in the newspaper business.
In the year In the late 1990s, the editor of the Personal Technology section, the late Bob Bersano, asked me to write a weekly column called Tech Advisor.
All I did then was answer questions from readers about their technology issues. of News I had a great team that produced an independent personal technology department every week and I was honored to be a part of that team. In the early and mid-2000s, the PTech class was reduced to covering once a week in the business class.
In the end I was the last man standing and have been writing the entire Personal Technology page for years, including product reviews and my original column.
I am very grateful Dallas Morning News Business staff, including anyone who has to edit my copy. For the last handful of years, that’s been Laura Jacobus, always putting up with me when I finish a sentence.
I always measure my writing by the number of questions Laura asks during her edits. Rarely, a week goes by without a question, which I consider a personal victory.
Thanks also to my former editors: Rick Barrick, Linda Johnson, and Janie Paleszczyk.
I also appreciate Paul O’Donnell, the business editor, who asked me to continue writing after I was fired. Morning news IT Department Five years ago.
Thanks to my wife, Donna, who brought several boxes from the front porch. She also has to put up with constantly changing gadgets like our front door bolt – and help me review them.
Finally, I would like to thank the readers. Every week I get a few dozen emails from readers in Dallas – and across the country as well – because my stories are syndicated.
Interacting with readers is the best part of this gig.
I’ve been writing about my mom a lot, and every time I bring her up, I know that for the next week or two, emails will pop up. People always love it when I write about her tech struggles. I can’t tell you how sweet it is when someone writes, “I wish you were my daughter if you could fix my computer.”
I wish I could fix everyone’s problems, but writing about them was the next best thing.
So thank you to everyone who made this possible.
