Following Sunday’s rubber match between the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers, the Cubs will venture north of the border for three games with the Toronto Blue Jays. However, due to Canada’s COVID laws, which require those entering the country to be fully vaccinated, two players will not travel with the team. LHP Justin Steele and RHP Adrian Sampson will not travel to Toronto and will meet the Cubs in St. Louis for their weekend series starting Sept. 2.
Truthfully, the lack of travel presents a good opportunity for Justin Steele. He left Friday’s start early with back tightness. Now, he’ll likely get a few extra days of rest in Chicago, only helping his back. Steele would have pitched on Wednesday had he traveled, so the two extra days of rest will benefit the Cubs’ 2022 Ace.
Sampson will not miss a start due to the trip. Sampson does battle with LHP Eric Lauer in Milwaukee on Sunday, so Sampson will be ready for his next start in St. Louis. He takes the bump as the Cubs go for another series win against the Brewers in recent weeks.
All three games against Toronto currently list the Cubs’ starter as TBD. However, with Steele set to miss his start, we’ll likely see Marcus Stroman, Javier Assad, and maybe Mark Leiter Jr. as the starters. Once the team returns to action on Friday, Cubs fans can expect to see Justin Steele along with Drew Smyly and Adrian Sampson in the Cardinals series.
