After a loss to Virginia on Saturday, Syracuse men’s basketball returns to the Dome to face the Hoos’ in-state rival – Virginia Tech – on Wednesday.
In its 73-66 loss to No. 11 UVA, the Orange struggled early in each half. In the first half, the Hawks opened the game with an 11-2 run and outscored Cusu 11-0 to start the half No. 2. Syracuse made a late comeback attempt.
One player Syracuse should see a better performance from Wednesday is center Jesse Edwards. Against the Cavaliers, the Dutchman averaged four points. Also, his big man hasn’t scored more than 12 points in his last six games.
Head coach Jim Boeheim said Edwards’ game has changed significantly this season compared to previous games.
“[Jesse]He’s not playing the way he was at the beginning of the year,” Boeheim said. “He doesn’t get pushed to the basket.”
Going back on Wednesday could be a challenge for the senior. Virginia Tech enters this contest at 11-5 with the ACC’s third-best scoring defense.
Despite a strong defense, the Hokies enter this tournament on a four-game skid. Virginia Tech started the season 11-1 with its only loss coming to now-No. 22 Charleston, then lost four consecutive contests – all ACC opponents. Those losses put VA Tech at 1-4 in conference play.
Boeheim said after the Virginia game that the players, especially the younger ones, will use that game as a learning curve for Wednesday’s game.
“[The young players] It’s getting better, and this team is getting better,” Boeheim said.
