TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – The Better Business Bureau is known for warning about scams and scammers, but the organization focuses on recognizing companies that do the right thing.
“We’re here to salute honest business,” said Dick Epstein, president of the Better Business Bureau of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan.
Eppstein has been a leader in the Toledo area for more than 40 years. He said recognizing marketplace ethics through the Torch Awards is just as important as warning people about bad businesses.
“It’s a wonderful thing to give someone an award for their life’s work. The award winners are very grateful for the honor because we stand for ethics and integrity. We’ve had people cry when they win or run on stage. We’ve had people give speeches like they’ve just won an Oscar. This award means a lot to people,” Epstein said.
Since 2002, several businesses have been honored with the Torch Award.
“We have law officers, non-profits, roofers, mechanics, construction jobs. Virtually any business can win this award. The candidates come from places like customers and other businesses. They will be evaluated on how they treat customers, employees and suppliers. There are five winners every year,” Epstein said.
Dr. Chris Nicholas and dentist Nicholas & Baburek won the 2020 Torch Award.
“It is a true honor to be recognized by an external source. We strive for excellence in everything we do,” said Dr. Nicholas.
There are dozens of employees at the 50-year-old Toledo practice, and their focus is on helping patients stay happy and healthy.
“We have an incredible group of talented and thoughtful people. They are really nice people. “We have a staff-driven office and we work together to get to the bottom line,” said Dr. Nicholas.
This year’s Torch Award winners will be announced on September 15. The event will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn Levi’s Commons. Lee Conklin will be the Master of Ceremonies this year.
