Spain’s Ministry of Health has confirmed the country’s second death from the monkey virus.
The news came less than 24 hours after the first death from the disease was reported by the ministry on Friday evening, Xinhua news agency reported.
The second death was recorded in Europe.
The identities of the victims have not yet been released. The first victim, a resident of Comunidad Valenciana in eastern Spain, died of encephalitis related to the infection.
According to data collected by the National Epidemiological Vigilance (RENAVE), 4,298 cases of the virus have been confirmed in Spain (64 of them women), and 120 people need hospital treatment.
According to the data, more than 80 percent of the infections are acquired through sexual intercourse, and 10.5 percent of the infections are caused by sexual intercourse.
In Spain, the average age of a person infected with monkeypox is 37 years, although there have been cases recorded in a 10-month-old baby and an 88-year-old.
Cases have been reported in all of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities, but most are from the Comunidad de Madrid (1,656), with a further 1,406 from Catalonia and 498 in the southern region of Andalusia.
