Citizen CZ second-generation smart watch
Citizen announced its second-generation CZ smartwatch at CES 2023, and it uses technology from NASA to predict what you’ll be doing in the next 24 hours.
You’ll find this advanced, AI-powered health information in Citizen’s Smart YouQ app, which the company calls a “self-care advisor.”
NASA’s unit takes action when taking the Alert Monitor Test, a citizen-based test of mental alertness for astronauts by NASA. That might not sound like much fun, but the process is “integrated” to make it less like a chore.
This test produces an alertness score, so it can be a fun way to measure those moments when your brain doesn’t feel fully on.
There is also a more interesting part to the Citizen CZ watch software. After “seven to ten days,” the watch will work on your calendar.
This is a profile that represents your natural sleep patterns that correspond to your circadian rhythm. It tells you whether you are more of a morning person or a night person.
Citizen says this profile will not only be based on whether or not you wake up late, but “alarm results, chronotype, sleep patterns, activity and heart rate monitoring.”
Power fixes are an active part of this process – giving you tips on how to deal with those frustrating breakdowns, even before they happen. Fitbit will offer comparable features in sleep profiles, added to Fitbit Premium in mid-2022, hiding chronology behind cute giraffe, bear, dolphin, hedgehog, parrot and turtle avatars.
Citizens take will be digested? This will be a significant part of making this thing feel worthwhile.
This software aside, the second-generation Citizen CZ smartwatch’s tech is familiar. It’s a Wear OS watch with a Snapdragon Wear 4100+ chipset and 8GB of storage.
Sensors include a barometric altimeter and blood oxygen reader, as well as standard GPS, heart rate reader and motion sensors.
Battery life is measured in the typically unremarkable “24+” hours, and there are 41mm and 44mm versions, though both appear to have 1.3-inch OLED screens.
These two sizes have completely different design personalities, with the larger one being super built, with a diver’s watch look. They are called Sport (44 mm) and Ordinary (41 mm) lines.
Citizen, the second generation CZ smartwatch, will be available in the US from March 2023. Casual watches start at $350, while the larger 44mm Sport models start at $375. This is the first Citizen CZ watch of 2020 for less than its original price, which was $400.
