Venture debt, events, APIs: Small-business neobanks get innovation

Neobanks once stood out for serving small business owners with digital tools that most traditional banks couldn’t find. But the need to distinguish themselves in other ways has arisen because such features, including receipts and cash flow analysis, are common among small business neobanks, although few traditional banks offer the same.

“If you want to start a neobank, you can’t be for everyone,” said Ian Benton, senior analyst for digital banking at Javelin Strategy & Research. “Businesses want something specific to their needs that allows them to connect with other professionals in their area.”

On the production side, at the beginning of this year it introduced venture debt, a form of financing for companies that have previously developed venture capital.

“It’s a very startup-oriented lending product,” says Mercury co-founder and CEO Imad Akhund, not to mention a restaurant owner. The recently launched credit card does not require a credit check. Mercury manages its own underwriting and risk assessment using factors such as how much money the customer has in their Mercury account and whether they have received venture capital funding.

Meanwhile, the company launched Mercury Rise in September 2020 to connect founders with other founders, investors and mentors. This program includes virtual and in-person events that help founders jumpstart their seed rounds by meeting investors in the Mercury network, getting funding and funding for Series A, getting capital for ecommerce businesses, and more. Its incubator programs have worked with 687 startups in 32 countries so far. Akhund identified another benefit to drilling into a niche: getting to know your customers and catching fraud more easily. “There are many signs that we are paying attention to this area,” he said. Nerve launched in Austin, Texas in September 2021 as a neobank for musicians. It has since expanded to creators, which can include actors, writers, podcasters, influencers, educators or coaches – or some of those with multiple businesses and income streams.

“Many musicians are also prolific creators,” Wapsch said. “They can be in a band, do graphic design and give piano lessons.”

Although people can sign up directly to Nerve by downloading the app, that’s not the main way the company intends to create accounts. Nerve launched Open Application Programming Interfaces several months ago. The idea is that companies that serve creators, such as an ecommerce site that sells merchandise or an artist distributor that manages the licensing and distribution of music for streaming, can embed these APIs into their websites and apps. The APIs allow creators using such services to open free deposit accounts, send and receive instant payments, and choose to share their neural transaction and balance data with the website or app hosts. Companies can use this data to build unique loans, provide insights, and more.

Some APIs are free to use, while others, such as Payouts, allow companies to pay creators. About 15 companies are currently using Neural APIs, and there are thousands of customers with Neural Counts. Wapsh says that by 2023, companies deploying neural-embedded banking and payment services will reach millions of innovators.

Account owners can share their accounts with others, but control who can send or have read-only access. “It’s very creative-oriented,” Wapsch said. “Most inventors have multiple businesses and are often partnerships or collaborations.” For example, a business manager may have control over the account, but a musician can control the money as their clients come and go.

Benton sees plenty of room for neobanks to fill gaps in the small-business market, particularly from industries or affinity groups with specific payment and financial management needs.

“There’s a lot of greenfield territory that hasn’t been addressed yet. Many traditional community banks and credit unions are trying to specialize in attracting those markets, but there’s an opportunity for neobanks to pursue those.”

Akhund of Mercury has the same feeling.

“Everybody has their own little piece of the pie,” he said.
