What the tech means: Facebook changes ‘Feed’ options

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – Facebook doesn’t often make changes that most people like. But the social network surprised many people when it added a new row of Facebook smartphone apps.

The new row is what Facebook users have been looking for for years and will change not only how they view a friend’s posts, but their posts as well.

You generally don’t like Facebook’s algorithm of showing you things people say they want to see, but there was no easy way to ignore it.

And if you have thousands of Facebook friends, one big complaint is not seeing all of their posts.

That changes with this update. Facebook has added a new “Feed” option at the top of your Facebook home page.

Select “Recent” and you’ll see a sequence of posts from all your friends, groups, and pages you follow. You can see posts from friends you forgot you were friends with.

There are two other tabs. “Your Feed” is recommended posts from Facebook based on the things and people you interact with the most. And a “Favorites” feed to see only your friends’ posts if you’ve added them to your favorites list.

If you forget to create a Favorites list or want to change the list, Switch allows you to manage your Favorites list by adding or deleting friends.

You can’t unfollow or unfriend someone by removing their name from your list, it just won’t show up when you select the Favorites tab. You can only have 30 favorite friends, groups and pages on the list.

If you’ve been on Facebook for a long time and liked a lot of pages, your timeline feed is going to be filled with posts from those pages. Local “shopping” or “marketing” groups are popular for this as they allow all users to post to their group or page.

When we selected “Recent,” there were hundreds of articles crowding out recent articles from our friends.

If you want to see fewer posts from those pages and more posts from friends, you may want to back away from those pages or leave groups you no longer want.

After testing, we saw that friends we haven’t seen on Facebook in years and friends we don’t know are still active Facebook posters.

If you don’t see the new feed option at the top of the page, update to the latest version of Facebook. Facebook generally releases new features, so they won’t be available to everyone right away, so check for the next Facebook app update.

Finally, Facebook listened to users who wanted to see more friends and what Facebook thought they wanted to see.
