Venture capitalists get it It’s flooded with startup lines that make founders stand out, especially for those building in crowded categories. And while every investor is looking for something different, there are ways founders can improve their chances of getting noticed.
Speaking at last weeks Disrupt 2022 conference, investors Annie Case, partner at Kleiner Perkins; Sheel Mohnot, co-founder of Better Tomorrow Ventures; And Jomayra Herrera, partner of Reach Capital, who managed to attract the attention of the founders who come to the pitch process.
Of course, this can mean many things. Case says it’s incredibly helpful when helping founders prepare for their pitch meetings. When founders send information or preview their decks before the stage, she can immediately move past surface questions, which frees up more time for deeper questions, she said. This allows her to walk away from the meeting with more information, which helps a founder get a check online.

For Herrera, sending a partial or basic pitch deck, or display, only if necessary can be very useful.
“In general, I recommend having a teaser version of the deck with enough information and data to help us understand where you are in terms of your company’s journey,” Herrera said. “Just enough information so that we can come prepared to the meeting.”
The three investor founders agreed to come to the pitch meeting ready to answer questions about the team, progress and TAM. Mohnot says it’s a red flag when companies don’t seem to have considered these potential questions, especially when it comes to competition.
“If you start a company and there are three or four companies that people are looking at [in the space]I expect you to know the intimate details of those companies,” Mohnot said.
