Flame of fire

DULUTH, Minn. – The Duluth Fire Department is battling a fire that broke out Wednesday evening at a building that includes four apartments and businesses in the Central Hillside neighborhood.

At 5:37 p.m., firefighters were dispatched to a fire at the Lake Superior Medical Equipment Building.

Four apartments above the business were all evacuated.

No injuries have been reported so far.

The building is located at 522 East Fourth Street between Dunbar Flowers and Gifts and Uncle Louie’s Cafe.

A city spokeswoman said wind fueled the fire, and the fire department brought in a ladder truck to help attack the fire from above.

The 148th Fighter Wing also arrived on the scene shortly after 7:30 p.m., with an air trailer to refill firefighters’ breathing apparatus.

Gas and electricity were cut off for the entire block.

As of 9 a.m. Wednesday, the city said the fire was contained to only one building, but smoke and possibly water damage had spread to the other two.

While the area is closed, the city is urging people to stay away from the area as the air becomes unsafe to breathe and firefighters need a place to work.

They also want to strongly remind motorists to never drive over water pipes, which can damage them immediately.

Tonight, people affected by the fire will be given temporary housing.

It is not yet clear what ignited the fire.

This is a developing story. Stay with FOX21 for updates.
