Bakersfield drivers and business owners deal with water on city roads.

Bakersfield, Calif. (KERO) – Several streets in Bakersfield have been flooded recently, forcing drivers to navigate through flooded roads and some people think the infrastructure is good enough for the rain.

Bryanna Aguilar, who works at Bakersfield Sports Cards, said that when it rains, the roads around the store easily flood.

“You have to park so far, and you worry that people are going to hit you,” Aguilar said. “You have to stop on the way down there, go around it, and then make sure you don’t fall into the pond.”

According to Aguilar, this isn’t a recent development either.

“Last year during the winter, and it was the same. It was not as rainy as last year, so it was not bad, but the flooding is still here,” said Aguilar, saying that the city did not take. Liability for floods.

The city of Bakersfield said the drainage system reached capacity during the peak of the rain.

“I think yesterday[Monday]was a record rainfall for our area, and our system was at capacity for about two hours or so yesterday afternoon or night, and now we’re just working to make sure the debris is cleared,” said Joe Conroy, public information officer for the city of Bakersfield.

According to Conroy, flooded areas are still being attended to, and crews are working to clear drains from blockages, which Conroy said caused backups.

“We have crews using our vacuum trucks to remove any standing water that may be in those areas,” Conoy said.

As for Aguilar, she says the flooded area at her workplace is a safety issue for people trying to park.

“You can’t jump as far as you think. If you don’t have waterproof shoes, you have to do something that’s difficult to walk,” Aguilar said.

The City of Bakersfield recommends driving cautiously when the roads are wet and matching your speed to road conditions rather than relying on posted speed limits.
