Black women have always “embodied” fashion and style

Would you believe us if we told you that this was Regina Hall’s first New York Fashion Week experience like never before? We didn’t believe it either until she told us herself at the start of Kate Spade New York’s 30th anniversary to unveil her Spring 2023 collection. “This is it. This is my first Fashion Week. I’m creating a memory with you , so you will be one of my first memories of Fashion Week,” he said Son for Jesus said the star humbly.

Along with notable attendees including model Emira D’Spain, comedian Ziwe, actress Rebel Wilson, Netflix series Never Have I Ever star Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Hall was one of many attendees to witness and interact with the experiential presentation during New York Fashion Week. Right on the mark with the beauty of spring, Scary movie The alumna was dressed from head to toe in the collection created by Tom Mora and Jennifer Lyu. From the sophistication of the striped poplin terrace shirt in black/cream, to the waist-grabbing tulip-striped midi skirt in plum duck, Hall was serving up a look that only an icon like her could pull off.

Speaking of icon, did we mention she was carrying the icon Sam mini bag in off-white, along with her multi-colored greenhouse flower wrap ring and back-to-back greenhouse tulip earrings in pink. Talk about the ultimate brand. “I picked this today,” she said as she held her back proudly. “This bag is good because it’s not too big. You can use it and wear long straps, and it’s also great for the inside of the elbow. I feel like she looks like a lady.”

During the launch at the World Trade Center in New York City, Girls United caught up exclusively with Hall about her relationship with Kate Spade New York, her thoughts on Gen-Z fashion trends and her favorite fall fashion must-haves this.

Girls United: Take me back to when your relationship with Kate Spade began.

Regina Hall: “I think technically my relationship started when I was living in New York. I think I bought my first kate spade bag maybe in the summer in the late 90’s before I found out they were doing clothes. I just knew about their bags and shoes. I think they have some really comfortable dresses. For me, I need something that I can wear that is comfortable that I can start during the day, but maybe also go to dinner if I were meeting friends at night. I’ve been past the point of tight dresses all day [and] I love comfort. I like it to look nice and have something about it that’s elegant, but I like it to be comfortable. I’m like, ‘It’s a great effort, but not crazy.'”

What are your thoughts on the representation of black women in fashion and style over the years?

“That’s hard to say, because we have a lot of influence on fashion and style. We always were, even when we weren’t invited to the party, you know what I mean? The party was still repeating so much of what we were already doing. I think we embody fashion and style. I think so many things are imitated from things that we’ve done in style, or that we just wore and it just looked stylish because we were doing it. This ranges from the clothes and hairstyles we wear to the way we wear them [them]. It’s good to see more faces behind the scenes making designs; this is very exciting for me. I think it’s an area where our influence has always been there, but now we’re finally seeing the merits and opportunities for us to actually be part of the process, as opposed to just being the inspiration for the process.”

With New York Fashion Week comes fall and we love fall fashion. What are some fall fashion must-haves?

“I always love a nice pair of black pants. I love a nice pair of high-waisted jeans, you can wear a shirt. You can even wear a great heel with it, and then you can go out. It’s great for fall. I love a nice nice cashmere sweater. A good jacket is always a must, and solids, cream, white, black and gray. These are my colors. If I want to be fancy, I’ll throw on a red one. Especially if it’s in the fall, if it’s richer, blood red.”

We are in a digital age now where there are so many hacks and trends online. What are your thoughts on Gen-Z fashion, beauty and style?

“I like to see the style expressions of the new generations. I think it’s crazy. I was glad they brought me the high waisted jeans. I said, ‘Well, let’s go, General Z!’ and I was happy with the wider pant leg. There are a lot of things that are really simple but fun. I kind of love some of the great androgynous looks that are out now. I always like to see what each generation brings to fashion and what they bring to style, what I can steal from them and what I find suitable for me. Now, I can’t rock these hot new shorts with the back and crop top because my crop top days are over. It doesn’t look like me anymore, but I wore it when I was that age and it’s fun. It’s fun to see young people embodying their own style.”
