Announcement from Business Editor Lori Montgomery, Deputy Business Editor Damian Paletta and Business Editor Sandhya Somashekar:

We’re thrilled to announce that Daniel Gilbert is joining the Post to cover pharmaceutical business, a new spin on how drug companies, health technology companies and medical device makers are shaping, Washington and influencing the next generation of medicine. Leaving their mark on users.

Daniel comes to us from The Seattle Times, where he spent the past seven years as a special investigative reporter on medical and mental health care. Among his high-impact work, Daniels broke stories on a deadly mold outbreak at a children’s hospital, exposed delays in punishing medical professionals for misconduct, and developed a project on the growth of for-profit psychiatric hospitals that inspired state lawmakers to pass new legislation to protect patient safety.

Daniels previously covered fracking and Big Oil for the Wall Street Journal in Houston for five years, chronicling the collapse of industrial giants and writing memorable stories like what current Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson did at a water tower near his home. Daniels was previously a staff writer for the Bristol (Va.) Herald-Courier, where his investigation into the handling of natural gas royalty debt to landowners in Southwest Virginia earned the newspaper a 2010 Pulitzer for Public Service.

Daniels is the founder of the University of Kentucky’s Rural Computer-Assisted Reporting Fund, which helps journalists at small news organizations get information training for nonprofit investigative reporters and editors. He holds a BA in International Studies from the University of Chicago.

Joining the post is a homecoming for Daniel, a Manassa native. Daniel will be moving to the DC area with his wife and their two young children in the New Year.

Please welcome Daniel to the post. His first day is November 14.
