You are listening to the Expresso Entertainment Update. Here is the latest news from the world of Bollywood brought to you by The Indian Express.
Let’s begin with our top story. Bollywood Superstar Shah Rukh Khan is the only Indian in the list of ’50 Greatest Actors of All Time’ released by Empire magazine on Tuesday, 20th December. The list includes actors like Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks, Natalie Portman, Bette Davis and Denzel Washington among others. SRK’s manager Pooja Dadlani shared the news on Instagram. Meanwhile, SRK’s upcoming film Pathaan has been surrounded by controversy ever since they released their first song, Besharam Rang, a few days ago. The makers of Pathaan are set to release their upcoming song Jhoome Jo Pathaan on December 22.
Meanwhile, Actors Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh were plagued by separation rumours and speculation earlier this year. If their subsequent Instagram posts were not enough to put the buzz to rest, Ranveer recently flooded his Instagram stories from the FIFA World Cup with Deepika. She shared a photo with Ranveer as well at the World Cup final match between Argentina and France. She re-shared the Instagram stories posted by Ranveer where he expressed his pride after she unveiled the trophy, and called him her ‘rock’.
“Actor Varun Dhawan disagreed with his contemporary Dulquer Salmaan, who said that there is ‘great writing’ across industries. Both actors appeared alongside other actors at a roundtable interview conducted by Film Companion.
Varun said that to get to the good material, actors like himself have to weed through the bad scripts. But his comments were met with disapproval by veteran star Anil Kapoor, who was also a part of the discussion. Anil said that -“”It’s a part of their job. They have to accept it and be kind to the person who has come to narrate to them. It’s okay if one zones out, but you have to give that respect.'”
Actor Vidya Balan questioned why only director Sanjay Leela Bhansali walked away with all the credit for Gangubai Kathiawadi’s success and suggested that misogyny is the reason why Alia Bhatt wasn’t praised in the manner that most male actors would be after delivering a hit film. The period drama was released earlier this year to critical acclaim and box office success. In an appearance at the roundtable interview conducted by Film Companion, Vidya said that – “We have worked so hard as women to have a certain standing today, where we’re headlining films. More and more actresses are doing that. So, what about Gangubai then? It did more than most male-driven films.”
“Moving on, for Actor Tabu, things can turn around in a heartbeat, including the gender of a character. In Kuttey, the directorial debut of Vishal Bhardwaj’s son Aasmaan Bhardwaj, the actor said her part was originally written for a male actor.
In the film, starring Arjun Kapoor, Naseeruddin Shah, Konkona Sensharma, Radhika Madan and Kumud Mishra, Tabu plays a cop. During the trailer launch of the film, Tabu said it’s a part that was both, “challenging and fun.” Tabu, a long-time collaborator of filmmaker Vishal Bhardwaj, said Kuttey set was like a homecoming and noted that both father and son have distinct filmmaking voices.”
Actor Arjun Kapoor said that his decade-long journey in Bollywood has resulted in his film Kuttey. It is the culmination of finding his niche as an actor and diving into the world of inventive storytelling with the upcoming dark comedy. During the trailer launch of the film, Arjun said Kuttey was offered to him during the first lockdown two years ago and watching it come out so beautifully now had overwhelmed him. He also said Kuttey made him step out of his comfort zone. Produced by Luv Ranjan, Vishal Bhardwaj, Ankur Garg and Rekha Bhardwaj, the film has been co-written by Aasmaan and Vishal Bharadwaj. Kuttey is scheduled to release on January 13.
Filmmaker Rohit Shetty doesn’t think that Govinda, who delivered innumerable blockbusters for over a decade, ever got his due in the film industry. He said that the actor deserved to become a superstar as he, in collaboration with David Dhawan, had served some of the most iconic films of the 90s. In an interview recently, the director said that – It took Govinda and David Dhawan nearly ten movie collaborations till they cracked the ‘No. 1’ series of films.’ The actor-director duo eventually gave Bollywood a hit series that kicked off with Coolie No. 1 in 1995. However, Govinda’s career hit a rough patch and he stayed away from mainstream cinema for several years.
Lastly, Bollywood star couple Kareena Kapoor Khan and Saif Ali Khan’s son Taimur Ali Khan turned a year older recently. To mark the special occasion, Kareena took to her social media to share a few adorable images of the child where he could be seen looking into the distance, and in another, holding an imaginary microphone and singing into it atop a bed. Celebs and fans of the actor rushed to the comment section to wish the child as well.
