The Fashion Police Squad is a boomer shooter developed by Mopeful Games. You play as Desmond, an officer for the fashion police who takes care of crimes against fashion with a series of gadgets that fix people’s outfits.
The story is over the top, exaggerating every aspect of the plot, characters and fashion crimes. As a pun connoisseur, I appreciated fashion-based puns such as police using handcuffs. The jokes that failed mostly came from moments where they threw in a seemingly random reference or humor that matched the main story, such as to use a hacker-based boss a big hammer that says “stop”. It’s also a nice change of pace to have a shooter that involves fixing problems rather than killing. And at the end of each level, you get a fashion show of the people you’ve helped.
There are five tools related to specific fashion crimes, such as the 2dye4 ball, which can add a burst of color to dull costumes or use its secondary attack to absorb color from clothes that are too loud, or sewing machine that corrects diseases appropriate clothing. You have to identify the crime and use the right tool to fix it. The sixth weapon is a camo cannon that solves every mod problem but has limited ammo.
The game is at its best when it brings new gameplay elements, such as introducing new crime mods, gadgets and gameplay changes like sniper sections and two boss fights. However, during the seven hours it took to complete the campaign, the last three hours became a bit tedious as I faced a larger number of familiar enemies in smaller and smaller arenas.
Inconsistency is an issue that becomes a big problem in the back end of the game. Sometimes the request for a catch appears, but it does not work. Sometimes I would make a jump, and other times I couldn’t make the same jump. Clarity is also an issue. There is also a bug where after using your ultimate move, the Fab Slap Gauntlet, the gun wheel becomes unusable until you restart the section.
When he sticks to his themes, The Fashion Police Squad is as fun and quirky as its premise. However, when it runs out of relevant themes and relies on in-jokes and references beyond fashion, the story begins to fall apart. The gameplay is frenetic and the weapons are smart, but eventually it wears thin as the last quarter of the game relies on throwing more at you than fitting a suitable challenge. If you’re interested in a new shooter, it’s worth checking out. If you want more than that, its set of funny plot and characters might be enough to keep you invested throughout.
