You may have missed it when it came out last week, but Fashion Police Squad is a fun little colorful arena shooter from indie developers at Mopeful Games. In it you are Sergeant Des, and with a sewing machine in hand you are charged with uncovering a conspiracy of fashion crimes.
It might seem like a silly joke, but it had so many positive reviews that I had to give it a try: and underneath the fashionable exterior I found a pretty good game that remains funny, to boot. If you, like me, took this off from the looks alone, then you’re wrong.
The heart of the Fashion Police Squad is the need to switch between weapons. Your 2DYE4 is a shotgun that dyes bright colors and drains colorful clothing with a beam to overflowing, while the Tailormade Sewing Machine is an assault rifle that is extremely effective against ill-fitting and baggy clothes.
You match the weapon to the enemy type on the fly, tackling the most dangerous first and working your way down. Like the best Arena shooters, the most dangerous areas are almost a puzzle of skill and speed where identifying threats and knowing how to solve them is essential. The regular movement mechanics of the Fashion Police Squad match this.
You do this with your belt. By grasping the belt with objects in the world around you, such as flagpoles, your officer can swing to move quickly from place to place. This allows you to take on nasty enemies and avoid wild attacks like exploding bags or fast melee enemies. (Neon bros on scooters.) There’s something cool about running past a bad enemy as you blast them with your flamethrower.
It also has a kind of glory kill, because a special charge meter allows you to raise the shiny handle of style and fly through large spaces hitting fashion criminals with an ever-loving sense of fashion.
Is the joke still funny? I’m not done, but the fun bright colors and energy of FPS are actually a welcome break from the muted tones used in most retro shooters. (Whatever we call these.)
